From chaos to a strategic capability
How an undefined, one-person design role at Nationwide Building Society grew into a 12-designer practice — delivering £6.3bn in measurable business impact across Digital Vault, International Payments and beyond.
The Challenge: Navigating Through Turbulence
When I joined Nationwide Building Society as part of the mobile app delivery team, the design landscape was in complete disarray. The organisation had experienced a significant fallout with their external design delivery partner, leaving the in-house design team grappling with insecurity, delivery pressure, and the burden of unrealistic expectations. My role wasn't clearly defined at the outset. That ambiguity became an opportunity to reshape how design delivery would function within the organisation.
Partner Fallout
Complete breakdown of the external design delivery partnership relationship.
Team Stress
In-house designers battling insecurity and mounting delivery pressure.
Undefined Role
No clear mandate beyond preventing development bottlenecks.
Strategic Assessment and Foundation Building
Rather than rushing into tactical fixes, I ran a full diagnostic phase — understanding the problem thoroughly before prescribing solutions.
Delivery Plan Analysis
Studied the existing delivery roadmap, identifying critical dependencies, bottlenecks, and misalignments.
Working Model Evaluation
Assessed the operational delivery model — workflows, communication patterns, handoff processes.
Design Team Ways of Working
Understood the in-house team's methodologies, tools, collaboration patterns, and pain points.
Asset and System Audit
Thoroughly reviewed design assets, design system components, and documentation standards.
Based on this assessment, I identified the precise skill gaps and brought onboard three designers with complementary UX and UI expertise.
Building Trust Through Delivery Excellence
Our journey began modestly. Initially, we were entrusted only with UI designs for Android screens — a limited scope reflecting the organisation's cautious approach given recent setbacks. Through consistent delivery of high-quality work, our remit expanded significantly.
Android UI Only
Initial limited scope reflecting a cautious organisational approach.
iOS UI Added
Expanded to cross-platform UI design delivery.
UX Design Leadership
Full ownership of user experience design and strategy.
Two Products, Two Very Different Realities
The Banking App was moving from legacy Sencha to native and React. Internet Banking, by contrast, had far more functionality but no dedicated designers — mostly legacy UI being migrated to React.
Digital Vault
Nationwide's first modular, platform-agnostic React design solution — and the project that established our team's credibility.
Nationwide had no feature for customers to access their bank documents digitally. Owned end-to-end by the offshore design team, working closely with PO, BA and TA.
A single modular design, built once and built for flexibility — validated through user research and cleared through DAC accessibility testing.
Digital Vault later launched publicly with IBM Consulting, powered by IBM Content Manager OnDemand — launching a full quarter ahead of schedule in November 2024, eliminating roughly 14 million printed communications a year.
Transforming International Payments
If Digital Vault established our credibility, International Payments cemented our position as strategic design partners — a critical business challenge where poor design was directly costing Nationwide billions.
Co-owned by NBS and IBM designers. Built as a React journey in Internet Banking and a native journey in the banking app.
Reimagined from the ground up — fewer steps, clear progress indicators, intelligent form validation, and contextual help.
Design System Audit
The Nationwide Experience Language was originally built around mail and web assets, with no real consideration for mobile context.
Mapped every component to the current design system to identify gaps. Ran user interviews and benchmarked against IBM Carbon and Material.
Faster delivery of features through less time creating custom components, and measurably higher satisfaction among consuming teams.
Scaling the Team
The success of Digital Vault and International Payments transformed stakeholder perception of the team — and that trust let us grow strategically.

Business Impact
Three years after joining in an undefined role amidst organisational chaos, design at Nationwide has become a strategic capability rather than a service function.
Strategic North Star: 3-Year Vision

Platform Modernisation
Evolving design systems and technical foundations to support rapid experimentation, AI integration, and personalisation at scale.
Generational Inclusivity
Creating experiences that serve both Nationwide's traditional customer base and younger generations.
